FEDS HIRE VETS
Federal employment information for Veterans, transitioning military service members, and their families

Executive Order 13518, Employment of Veterans in the Federal Government, established the Veterans Employment Initiative and OPM created its Veterans Services Office to provide strategic leadership and direction for the Initiative. Using a strategic, straightforward approach to helping the men and women who have served our country in the military find employment in the Federal Government and helping to align the talents of these individuals with key positions, Veterans Services has better positioned the Government to meet mission objectives and citizens are better served. Veterans Services works across the Federal Government to increase the number of veterans, transitioning military service members, and their families employed and retained in the civil service. Currently, veterans represent approximately 31 percent of the Federal workforce, compared to 25.8 percent before the Executive Order was established.

Defining Struggles
Emergency responders are exposed to human suffering, tragedy, and personal danger as part of their daily work. They are also told that they should not have any emotional response to facing the dark underside of life again and again. In fact, it is common to encourage detachment as a way to stay healthy. But does this really work? Emergency responders too frequently experience burnout or PTSD and, without treatment, they may also experience the subsequent unraveling of their lives. Below, I describe burnout, PTSD, and complex PTSD (C-PTSD).
Cognitive Therapy for Suicidal Patients (CT-SP)
Many behavioral health providers have had training in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), but few are knowledgeable about how to best use CBT when working with a suicidal patient. Cognitive Therapy for Suicide Prevention (CT-SP) is an evidence-based, manualized cognitive-behavioral treatment for adults with suicidal ideation and behaviors.
(Online Course) Identification, Prevention, and Treatment of Suicidal Behavior for Service Members and Veterans
Description: In the United States, someone attempts suicide every 38 seconds and an average of 1 person every 15.8 minutes completes suicide. With data to suggest that only a third of military veterans are enrolled in the VA system, the need for culturally competent community providers trained in evidence-based practices for the assessment and treatment of suicidal behavior has never been greater. Based on content from the Center for Deployment Psychology, this training will provide you with information regarding the health significance of suicide with a focus on military and veteran populations.
Military Sexual Assault
Sexual assault within the military refers to sexual contact characterized by use of force, threats, intimidation, or abuse of authority as well as instances in which the survivor is unable to consent. The definition of sexual assault is consistent with the term military sexual trauma (MST) which was coined by the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA), not the Department of Defense (DoD). Both the DoD and DVA include sexual harassment and inappropriate touching within the category of sexual violence. Rates of sexual assault are comparable to same-age peers in civilian populations but may vary according to the definition of sexual assault as well as the time frame considered. In civilian populations, it is estimated that 5.2% of college women report sexual assault annually compared to 2.6% of active duty women (Black et al 2011). For males, .28% of active duty males are sexually assaulted each year (2010 Gender Relations Survey of Active Duty Members ).
